Malware: A Discussion – Part 3

Part 3: What To Do If You Have Malware On Your Device

Already in our discussion we have considered what malware is and how you can protect yourself. Keeping a watchful eye on your system is always the first step to keeping safe. View yourself as your device’s first firewall.

Even with our best efforts sometimes malware sneaks it’s way on to our device. Never view this as a minor inconvenience or interruption. Malware, like an injury to your body, can get worse if left untreated. Stop the infection quickly so your device does not become compromised.

What If You Are Unsure If You Have Malware

On your device be sure to run a scan that will look for malware. This can be done through running a scan using the antivirus programs you have on your device. Depending on the device you are using you may need to download programs designed to keep you safe. There are apps available for Apple and Android devices so be sure to download trusted apps for your safety. Windows computers come with a basic software that can scan your system for threats.

The point: be sure to scan your system often because malware is ever changing and you want to contain threats before they spread.

What If You Have Malware?

The obvious answer is to have the antivirus and antimalware software contain and clean your system. They are designed to, at a minimum, quarantine the item and then let you decide whether to delete the item or keep it. Why would you keep a quarantined file? Well sometimes files that you download from verified locations are flagged as malicious. Some in some cases you may not want to delete the file. But be careful! Really look at what the files are and make take the appropriate actions.
